SKIDMORE COLLEGE ℘ SUMMER SIX,

Inscribing Pages : Letterpress, Printing & Bookbinding
2 July - 2 August 2007, Megan O'Connell

Participants ‘inscribe’ a narrative sequence onto the surface of pages using both traditional and experimental printing methods. As we compose with type, we address issues of representation and the associative qualities of letterform.

Spaces between letters, words, lines, or text blocks are tuned. The project of writing as pleasure is extended into the profligate. The compositor—here performing language—amplifies, reiterates, fragments or minimizes passages. Words become loud or soft, printed or blind-stamped, integrated into an overall texture or made to break the weave altogether. The physicality of the binding structure and choice of materials further convey the concept and tone of the custom book.
