EXCHANGING PLEASANTRIES,
A workshop on the tenets of typography
16-17 November 2006, 61 Pleasant Street, D. Wolfe & M. O'Connell
Composing with moveable type and its attendant elements invites spatial exploration and improvisation. In collaborative pairs, students will negotiate the use of a single typographic elements on a shared plane and shift its perception from one possible reading to another. the element must appear at least once on either side of an imagined 'boundary' bisecting the compositional plane. The success of these dueling compositions depends on the degree of integrity each 'side' maintains, while relating to one another in a clever way. Creative pairs will need to turn the project around swiftly. They will have to articulate ideas, pull proofs, create layouts, critique to other's choices, and produce an edition in just two action-packed days. In toto, this suite of small format prints–produced in a lighthearted way–will demonstrate formal, semantic and typographic strategies.
